Statement
Several years after retiring in 1998, I became
serious about pursuing a long-held dream of
painting in watercolor. Starting in 2003, I’ve had
the chance to study with several noted watercolor
teachers: Naomi Brotherton, Tony Couch, Jan Hart,
Jerry Stitt, Frank Francese, Mel Stabin, Nita Leland,
Judy Morris, Jane Stephenson, Catherine
Anderson and Carl Dalio.
In that time I have learned and grown and am
developing my own style. I prefer representational
landscapes, but do some still life and portrait work,
too.
Transparent watercolor is my medium. The rising and setting sun and how to capture the
dynamic range of its changing light on paper fascinates me. Watercolor is illusive and
constantly challenging . . . each painting has its own surprises and gifts.
Background
Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, I’ve lived in Texas practically all of my adult life . . . as the
saying goes, “I got here as soon as I could.” I spent the last half of my career in corporate
public relations and advertising, even though I was trained as an electrical engineer, .
I am the 2008-2009 president of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, a 500-member
regional organization, with headquarters in Dallas. I also am active in the Richardson
Civic Art Society. I’ve been accepted in a number of local and regional juried shows and
won several awards.
