art haiku
Haiku is a three-line Japanese poem. With only 17 syllables . . . five in the first line,
seven in the second and five in the third . . . it captures the essence of the subject.
Here are some I've written that pertain to watercolor painting.
Watercolorists
Never die or fade away;
We just wet our sheets.
Painting is like life.
If you get your values right,
The rest is easy.
Interesting shapes:
Not round, not square, not equal.
They are just boring.
To paint is to see.
Paint the shape, not the object.
Seeing is the key.
Painting is replacing
What you know with what you see.
See it and paint it.
Change is important.
Gradation and variation
In value, color.
Creativity . . .
Plan, grow, stretch out of the box.
Do it every day.

Shape . . . Value . . . Color:
Watercolor's trinity.
But shape must come first.
