To me plein air painting has several categories.  True plein air
painting
is when you paint from nature, putting on paper and editing
what you see in the real world; it's a regular painting done outside.
Next is
journaling where you chronicle your experience quickly in a
journal or sketchbook, combining the image you see with some
commentary.  Finally, there is
sketching, where you record in a
sketchbook your plans, ideas, and "picture pieces" for future use,
possibly in larger paintings.  These might be value sketches to plan
darks and lights for a painting, contour or line drawings to plan a
compostion, or just some shapes or details you want to record.
"Exaggeration and modification are the undisputed prerogative
of the creative artist."
Charles Sargeant Jagger
Equipment for plein air work varies with the carrying capacity you
have and the time you will spend.

journal and sketchbook paintings.
