To me plein air painting has several categories. True plein air
painting is when you paint from nature, putting on paper and editing
what you see in the real world; it's a regular painting done outside.
Next is journaling where you chronicle your experience quickly in a
journal or sketchbook, combining the image you see with some
commentary. Finally, there is sketching, where you record in a
sketchbook your plans, ideas, and "picture pieces" for future use,
possibly in larger paintings. These might be value sketches to plan
darks and lights for a painting, contour or line drawings to plan a
compostion, or just some shapes or details you want to record.
"Exaggeration and modification are the undisputed prerogative of the creative artist." Charles Sargeant Jagger
