tip: Aid to Photographing Your
Paintings
Like most painters, I like to photograph finished watercolors. It’s difficult to
position the camera so it is perpendicular and square to the subject painting.
I bought a cheap, small mirror and hot-glued it to the end of a 2-inch wide ribbon
about 18” long. I glued a counterweight (I used a bolt) on the other end.
To take a parallax-free picture, I locate the mirror in the center of the
painting, then position my camera so that through the viewfinder I see the
camera reflection. Then I remove the mirror and take the picture.
One of the most important keys in getting a good photo of your painting is to use
a tripod. If you use a digital camera, as most of us now do, find a good software
program to balance the color and value in your photo image.
